Environmental Education Project (“PEA”): Support for Fishing Communities

With a focus on small scale fishing, the project is a compensatory measure that seeks ways to support small-scale fishing in the region. Since it was implemented in 2009, the PEA has promoted a series of meetings with the participation of representatives of 36 communities in the area of influence of its activities, spanning eight municipalities, seven of them in Rio de Janeiro and one in Espírito Santo. The projects supported by OGX are chosen by the community, with the support of volunteer representatives from each of the municipalities and technical consultants who work together with the fishing communities.

Projects developed by the PEA

In Macaé (RJ), the municipality has completed its project to acquire a refrigerated truck, which was chosen by the fishing community as what was most important to help fishermen get fish directly to the distribution centers, in order to get better remuneration for their work.

In the municipality of Itapemirim the priority was the refurbishing of the headquarters of fishing colony Z-10, which was concluded on June 2011.

The OGX PEA for São Francisco de Itabapoana started on November 2011 the training courses in IT and diesel engine mechanics, targeting the local fishermen and their families.

In São João da Barra (RJ), the chosen project was the construction of a mini-shipyard, seen as the best way to strengthen the colony community. With this, it will be easier for them to repair and maintain small-scale fishing vessels. The work is at the design stage.

In Campos dos Goytacazes the project for refurbishing and re-equipping of the fishing colony was concluded on September 2011.

Other municipalities are awaiting permits and environmental licenses for the completion of the OGX PEA in each location. Some examples of these projects are: fish storage and distribution center (Armação de Búzios); a cooperative (Cabo Frio) and legal aid (Arraial do Cabo).
